Here&#8217;s what I came up with.<\/p>\n<p>When comparing the volume ratio for specific barrels, the following fill curves occur:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-213\" src=\"http:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel1.png\" alt=\"Tapered-Barrel\" width=\"584\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel1.png 584w, https:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel1-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now holding a constant maximum radius, the following absolute volume ratios (compared to the straight sided barrel) occur:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel-21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-211\" src=\"http:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel-21.png\" alt=\"Tapered-Barrel-2\" width=\"584\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel-21.png 584w, https:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Tapered-Barrel-21-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rules of thumb:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The fill-volume ratio is approximately (<span class=\"text--secondary\">\u00b1<\/span>15%) linear with height when the upper to lower radius ratio is within 2:1.<\/li>\n<li>Half the volume of a cone is at the 20% height level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The final recommendation was to fill the barrel with a known volume (gallons) and mark the side.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A while ago, my parents&#8217; neighbor asked a good question: For a tapered barrel, is there an equation for the volume versus height?
