This book covers classical solution techniques, basic numerical methods, and -finally- the use of special techniques for solving non-trivial problems. This book is NOT acceptable for graduate students in mathematics, as can be seen directly in the title. Theory is briefly discussed, but the heart of the book is solving problems.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers (Dover Books on Mathematics)\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"625\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen style=\"max-width:100%\" src=\"https:\/\/read.amazon.com\/kp\/card?preview=inline&#038;linkCode=kpd&#038;ref_=k4w_oembed_zUnRJWPc5cdfcr&#038;asin=048667620X&#038;tag=kpembed-20\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I taught a graduate course (<a href=\"https:\/\/charles-oneill.com\/blog\/ges-554-partial-differential-equations\/\">GES 554, see here)<\/a> for engineers with the book. <span class=\"a-size-base a-color-base a-text-bold\">ISBN-13:<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"a-size-base a-color-base\">978-0486676203<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reasonable coverage of classical methods<\/li>\n<li>Very low cost ($12).<\/li>\n<li>Discusses the physics of why terms appear in PDEs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic at best.<\/li>\n<li>No formal mathematical proofs.<\/li>\n<li>Only 1 section (Burger&#8217;s equ) discussing non-linear PDEs<\/li>\n<li>Solutions in the back are often not correct<\/li>\n<li>Topic order (especially for classification) is scattered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stanley Farlow&#8217;s textbook Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers is a reasonable introductory book for undergraduate and graduate students in the sciences and engineering.
